2 Common types of Hunting Knives

Hunting and pocket knife has an evolutionary history of millions of years. From the first early man to our current age, knives have gone through a lot of change. The first knife, if you want to call it at that, was made from carved and chipped sharp stone by the Stone Age men millions of years ago. These are very rough in looks as well as in function. Ages later, we had something that we not call the hand axe. This was much more useful, as it could to use to cut, slash, and operate with more speed and a greater degree of precision. The axe could be used for butchering, as a hammer, as a scraper, as a skinning knife and others. Years later, we could develop more complex but better knives that could cut better. Knives had things like drop point and tanto point for easy penetration. 

There are many types of hunting and pocket knife. One of the most interesting ones is the Hunting Knife. It is made to be used during hunting, and therefore can be used for a wide variety of things needed to survive in the wild. In this blog, we shall learn about the Hunting Knife.

The Hunting knife, by definition, is anything that is made for the express reason of hunting in the wild. Understand one thing here that you need a number of blades for hunting, not only one single blade. However, some of these are multipurpose blades and thus can be of considerable help in a number of jobs, like in cutting rope, skinning animals and fish, for gutting fish etc.

There are various kinds or styles of hunting and pocket knife. These include the clip point, the drop point, the spear point, the trail point and the roach belly point. Let us look at some of these.

Clip point: This is the most common blade type and also the first to be made. In a clip point style, there is a spine that you can see extending from the hip. The spine is 2/3^rd of the blade length. It tapers at one point and curves in order to create a false but sharp secondary cutting edge.

Drop Point: Did you know that the oldest known blade of this type was discovered in 12,000 BC? These have a blade drop to a sharp point that is just below the blade’s spine. Compared to the Clip Point, the Drop Point is stronger and is a better hunting knife.
